Direction: B R Chopra
Cast: Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala
Filmmaker BR Chopra's evergreen hit Naya Daur has been coloured and re-mastered for re-release this week, fifty years after its original release in 1957.
The film, a very engaging drama about the often overlooked consequences of progress, starred Dilip Kumar as the earnest tongawallah who accepts a challenge to race against a bus.
It's an inspiring story about the conflict between man and machine, and the reason why Naya Daur is still such a compelling film today is because the story is still so relevant.
Most people I know feel classics shouldn't be touched, they don't approve of colouring black-and-white films, and I see their point. But I'm of a different opinion. I believe that if by colouring a black-and-white gem you're able to bring a few hundred people into the cinema who would otherwise have stayed away, then it's well worth it.
If that's the only way to introduce a classic film to a whole new generation, then let's not make such a fuss about colouring.
One of my favourite things about Naya Daur is its excellent music score by O P Nayyar who delivered such memorable hits with Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle.
