NC to stake claim in J-K, eyes Congress support

Srinagar: The National Conference, which is emerging as the single largest party in Jammu and Kashmir after elections, will stake a claim to form the government in alliance with the Congress, said party President Omar Abdullah.
"We will approach the Congress. We always had good relations with the Congress. There is a lot of scope for Congress and National Conference to come together. We represent entire state," said Omar.
"Yes, if the current trends of leads in 27 seats hold momentum, we will approach the Congress which is a like-minded party. We will approach the Congress to form the government," he added.
Expressing his satisfaction with the good show by the NC, Omar said the party can now only go forward.
Asked who would be the next chief minister as the party had already projected Farooq Abdullah as chief ministerial candidate, he said a final decision would be taken later on.
Referring to the large voter turnout, he said people wanted to separate day-to-day problems from the Kashmir issue and that was why a large number of people came out to exercise their franchise.
"Importantly, this election was held without the fear of the gun," he said.
Omar’s father Farooq Abdullah said if the party comes to power the chief minister would be selected by its “high command”. “Our gates and windows are open for alliance," said Farooq about alliances.
"I would rather be in Parliament," he said in New Delhi when asked who would be the chief minister if the party forms the government.
Omar won by a margin of 3,600 votes from Ganderbal, where he was defeated in 2002.
