New Delhi: Krishan is a twelfth standard student and loves movies, but with his Board exams round the corners, he hardly has time to watch any. The only consolation is that this year his favourite subject - movies - is part of his school syllabus.

NCERT has introduced Bollywood movies, as reference material in textbooks.

"We relate to the text now with a much broader perspective and the movies give us a clear idea of what the text is about. Now my parents don't object to my watching these movies," says he.

The NCERT team which came up with this idea feels it will help students understand various subjects better.

Centre for Studies and Development Societies, Yogendra Yadav says, "These students who are eighteen and nineteen are about to become voters. And we thought Indian cinema - which is one of the most powerful commentaries on Indian society, a deeply political commentary on Indian society - is possibly one of the best vehicles."

Presently, eight movies have been incorporated in the NCERT syllabus. These include Garam Hawa based on India and Pakistan's partition, Roja projecting regional aspirations, Haqeeqat which elaborates on the 1962 war and Zanjeer portraying the erosion of moral values in the system.

Teachers too have welcomed the move.

"Our purpose is that students should learn and we must make children comfortable in their learning environment," says a teacher, N N Nayyar.

With the NCERT turning work into play, there is less pressure on children and they can enjoy their movies while studying.
