Mumbai: The Congress party and the Nationalist Congress Party seem to be heading toward a conflict over the seat-sharing issue for the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections.
While Congress has given indications that the party workers want to fight the elections independently, the NCP state president RR Patil has also hinted that all isn’t well between his party and the Congress.
“NCP wants to make an alliance with the Congress so that we can keep communal forces away from power, but just we wanting it is not enough. Everybody knows who is openly speaking about fighting elections on their own strength,” said Patil.
“We don’t think there will be any problem but in case there is a dispute we want to be ready for it. But I am hopeful that the issue will be resolved,” said Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
In 2004 Assembly elections, the Congress-NCP seat equation was –
Total seats – 288
- Congress fought on 165 seats
- NCP contested 123 seats
But this time the equation seems to be changing.
With leaders like Vilasrao Deshmukh openly saying that the Congress should get into only a post-poll alliance with the NCP, the pressure on Sharad Pawaris is increasing.
Pawar is reportedly preparing a list of candidates for all 288 constituencies in the state.
