BHUBANESWAR: The Nationalist Congress Party  is likely to field candidates in 130 Zilla Parishad seats in the three-tier panchayat polls, filing of nomination papers for which started on Saturday.

NCP State president Utkal Keshari Parida said the State unit had sought the consent of the central party for fielding the candidates without any alliance with Congress, BJD or the BJP. However, the party is not averse to arrangements at the local level, he said. Parida said that the number of seats to be contested will be finalised in a day or two.

Candidates’ selection begins: Meanwhile, all the three major parties have started the process of selection of candidates. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and BJD Rajya Sabha member Pyarimohan Mohapatra were closeted at Naveen Nivas here on Saturday to finalise the party’s candidates. Sources said that the two leaders will again meet. Candidates for Zilla Parishad seats will be finalised as per the recommendations of the party MLAs or senior leaders where the party is not represented in the Assembly. The 11-member selection committee of the Congress will meet here on Sunday to finalise the candidates. Filing of nomination papers of Congress will start on January 9.
