Shillong: The Nationalist Congress party (NCP)-led Meghalaya Progressive Alliance (MPA) government on Wednesday lost majority in the state assembly.
The party’s lone MLA from Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) withdrew support, a day after two Independents pulled out of the alliance.
KHNAM MLA and state Urban Affairs Minister Paul Lyngdoh gave his resignation to Chief Minister Donkupar Roy on Wednesday morning.
"I have learnt through reliable sources that one of the chief architects of MPA, PA Sangma, has been holding parleys with the Congress for the formation of an alternative government, thereby violating the spirit of the alliance," Lyngdoh said in his resignation letter.
“In the light of the developments, I deemed it fit to be in liberty to walk out of the coalition," he added.
The ruling coalition now has 30 seats in the 60-member house even as there are indications that more MLAs could shift allegiance.
Two independent MLAs, one of whom had joined the alliance two weeks back, had withdrawn support to the MPA on Monday.
While the two Independents are in the Congress camp, it is not clear whether Lyngdoh has joined the Opposition party Congress.
The 12-month-old five-party ruling coalition of MPA now has 30 MLAs - NCP 15, UDP 10, Hill State Peoples Democratic Party two, BJP one and two Independents.
The Congress is, however, the single largest party with 26 seats.
