New Delhi: Nearly four lakh chickens will be culled in Birbhum and South Dinajpur districts on Wednesday.
The culling will be done in a five-km radius of the affected poultry farms. Farms in a 10-km range will be disinfected.
Teams comprising experts from the National Institute of Communicable Diseases will also visit the affected areas on Wednesday.
The virus has reportedly killed over 35,000 poultry in the two districts.
On Tuesday, the Health Ministry confirmed dead poultry samples had tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu virus.
This is the third time bird flu has broken out in India.
In 2006, lakhs of poultry were culled after an outbreak in Nandurbar district of Maharashtra. A similar outbreak was witnessed in Manipur in July 2007.
