Nehru Cup to be held as scheduled

There's some good news for Indian football fans as the Nehru Cup shall be held as scheduled after Municipal Corporation of Delhi has assured that extra precautions would be taken in order to ensure that the Ambedkar Stadium turf isn’t hampered for the premier football event.

The Independence Day celebrations are to take place at the Nehru Cup venue on August 15, with the football tournament to be held from August 18.

The rehearsals for the I-Day have begun and a big ‘pandal’ (temporary structure for public events) is to be built over the turf with carpets and covering from the top.

The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) top brass, including acting president Praful Patel and general secretary Alberto Colaco, met the Municipal Commissioner of the capital, KS Mehra last evening and thereby got the corporation’s full support.

Speaking to Goal.com, Delhi Soccer Association secretary, N Bhatia said, “The Nehru Cup shall go as scheduled and the MCD has assured us of their support after the honourable minister (Praful Patel) had a word with them.

“We shall have a joint inspection of the ground and thereby, see what can be done to avoid any damage to the turf.”

It is learnt that the Indian FA would station some of their members at the Ambedkar Stadium to ensure that the turf wouldn’t be in bad condition.
