Nehru out, MP to 'book' RSS biggies

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan may not match his predecessor Uma Bharti in the Hindu and saffron rhetoric, but he is implementing what even the ousted BJP firebrand sanyasin did not do to further the Saffron cause.

After removing a poem on India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru from the textbooks of Class I students, the Chief Minister is now talking about including chapters on Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) stalwarts Guru Golwalkar and K B Hedgewar in the curriculum.

“Nobody even lights a candle at the memorial of people who helped us get independence. We can't forget him (Golwalkar) and keep on teaching about Nehru,” Chouhan said.

Chouhan has made no bones about what he wants and his government has removed a poem on Nehru to make space for these RSS top men.

"Guru Golvalkar was a mahapurush (great man) and his contribution especially towards character building of the youth and also towards inculcating a feeling of love towards the country was matchless. Both Golvalkar and Hegdewar were great men and people should know about them," Chouhan contended.

But Chouhan's newfound love for Golwalkar is not going down well with ex-BJP firebrand Uma Bharti's Bharatiya Janshakti Party.

"They did not remember Dr Hegdevar for the past 10 years, neither did the remember Guru Golvalkar or Savarkar. But since Janshakti Party came into existence they are worried about their existence and talking such things," National vice president, Bharatiya Janshakti Party, Bharatiya Janshakti Party said.

With a space of 10 days, the Madhya Pradesh government has removed nursery rhymes like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Ba Ba Black Sheep from school textbooks, did away with a poem on Nehru and also removed a story written by Dr Zakir Hussain.

Now Shivraj Singh Chouhan, by floating the idea of including chapters on Hegdevar and Golvalkar in textbooks, is trying to position himself on the right side of the Sangh Parivar.

With little or no progress on real issues, this perhaps is the only way for Chouhan to latch on to the chair that he has got quite easily.
