Nepal Maoists won't do a rethink, peace in danger

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Talks to defuse a standoff between Nepal's ruling seven-party coalition and the Maoists did not succeed on Wednesday.

The Maoists refused to rethink their decision to withdraw from the government. At an emergency meeting of the seven-party ruling alliance and the Maoists, the former rebels did not agree to withdrawn their decision to quit the government and call off their plans for street protests.

They want the monarchy abolished and Nepal to become a republic ahead of Constituent Assembly elections next month.

The former rebels announced three-week long protests and a "door-to-door campaign", including strikes and demonstrations, aimed at derailing the constituent assembly polls on November 22.

Maoist chairman Prachanda held a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister G P Koirala before the eight-party meeting began.

Prachanda agreed to discuss the matter with his party colleagues before taking any decision, Nepali Congress-Democratic Vice President, Gopal Man Shrestha was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Negotiations are expected to continue on Thursday. Publicly at least, the Maoists still appear committed to the political process and to be working out a consensus solution.
