Nepal palace govt property, King to vacate

Kathmandu: For 240 years, the Narainhiti Palace at the heart of Kathmandu has symbolised the political and social ethos of Nepal, but as the Seven Party Alliance got together to declare Nepal a fedral democratic republic, the palace will become the government's property and the king will have to leave.

The final nail in King Gyanendra's coffin was driven by the very political forces that were holding out and Prime Minister Koirala was among them.

But it was the price that had to be paid to ensure the Maoists returned to the interim government and cooperated not sabotaged next April's elections to the constituent assembly.

Maoists will be integrated into mainstream and they in turn will return seized properties, but all this is evoking mixed reactions in Kathmandu.

For most people, the political shenanigans have little relevance given shortages and price rise.

People say petrol strikes affect them more than political issues like republic or monarchy.

Disillusionment with the politicians is widespread and there's little confidence in the credentials of the Maoists. Nepal's political future appears as murky and uncertain as the present.
