Kathmandu: Nepal's deposed King Gyanendra is paying the price to be a commoner.
He will have to shell out over a million dollars as electricity bills within 15 days or face a blackout.
The huge sum is for 22 palaces and bunglows of the Royal family for which power bills haven't been paid since 2005.
Gyanendra left the Narayanhiti Palace in June this year and now lives in a hunting lodge near Kathmandu.
The palace is being turned into a museum.
The arrears date back several years for power to 22 palaces and bungalows
Gyanendra's sisters, daughters and cousins also owe money to the electricity authority.
“Separate notices to Royal family members to pay the bills have had no response. The palace is due to be opened as a museum and the former King's current home is on the list of places that will face a blackout if the bills are not paid,” an official said.
The former king and his relatives have not paid their electricity bills since Gyanendra sacked the government and took direct control of the nation in 2005.
