Mumbai: The horror of the 2005 deluge is yet to fade from the minds of Mumbaikars — a deluge caused by the indiscriminate dumping and encroachment along the River Mithi.
And it seems that a similar situation may arise in future, thanks to a bridge construction by the railways, right at the mouth of the river.
BJP leader and Mithi activist, Kirit Somaiya says, "In the Mithi River project, it is clearly stated that the river will be deepened near the mouth, but nothing has been done."
The waterway is only 50 metre wide in the area where the bridge is being constructed and as a part of the track expansion, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation has already filled up earth along the river and has even cleared some mangroves in the area.
The work has been going on for quite sometime now and the Railways Department says it has taken care of all the required permissions and environmental hazards, by incorporating a flexible design for the bridge.
MRVC Project Manager, D K Saini says, "In case the waterway needs to be extended, the bridge can also be extended."
But activists feel that unless construction of the bridge and widening of the waterway are undertaken simultaneously, it would lead to a repeat of the 2005 deluge.
