New Delhi: Sparkling jewellery, flashy home décor, hot jalebis, hotter samosas- if you want a taste of Delhi, you don't need to look beyond Chandi Chowk. But only if you can get through the traffic.
The Delhi High Court has ordered all cycle-rickshaws off Chandni Chowk from June 1 to ease traffic snarls. And now there's a new method to end the madness. The 15 mini buses were fought over on their very first day of operation.
For someone like S Nandi, who has to make his way through Chandni Chowk everyday to get to work, the buses are a huge relief.
“It's very nice. We wont have to travel in rickshaws in the heat,” says Nandi.
The rickshaw pullers who're braving the Chandni Chowk ban feel that the government is making it hard for them to earn a living.
“We are daily wagers. We are not against this bus service but rickshaws should not be banned,” says Delhi Rickshaw Chalak Morcha, Bhagwan Jaiswal.
But at Rs 5 a ticket, daily commuters are likely to be only too happy to give other vehicles a miss.
