New Delhi: It's a new year gift from Air India. The country's flagship carrier has started a fare war by announcing price cuts in its basic fares between 35-82 per cent in 19 sectors. However, there are no changes in the fuel surcharge or the taxes charged.

The highest fare cut is from Mumbai to Calcutta, down Rs 2,400 - a 35 per cent drop.

For the Chennai-Bangalore sector, it's an 82 per cent drop from Rs 1,100 rupees to Rs 200.

The basic fare for Delhi-Mumbai will now be Rs 1,675 rupees down from Rs 3,300, a drop of 49 per cent. And the basic fare for Delhi to Bangalore will now be Rs 2,300 down 38 per cent from Rs 3,700.

So on an average the fares on these sectors are down by 52 per cent. Sources at Air India say that the airline is looking at extending these cuts to other sectors very soon.

These cuts were made possible after a steep drop of over 50 per cent in jet fuel prices. With another cut in fuel prices expected soon, flying could become cheaper still.

Air India follows basic fare cut by Jet Airways which announced a cut of 15-40 per cent on Monday. Kingfisher and other airlines are expected to follow with similar cuts in a few days.
