Hyderabad: On the night of January 27th, two pregnant women were wheeled into the operation theatre in Vijaynagaram's Govt Gohsa Hospital and only one baby survived the birth that night.
The Government Gohsa Hospital has not only refused to provide any sort of explanation whatsoever to the parents, but the body of the child who apparently died at birth has still not been handed over to the parents.
In a completely unethical medical practice, there is no death certificate for the dead child, no stated cause of death and a refusal to even provide the identity of the child who died.
However, the women are not ready to accept that it may have been their baby who died.
In a country where girl babies are often not welcomed, the baby who survived seems to be luckier than most. Two mothers claim to have given birth to her and two mothers want her. They take care of her in shifts, Padmavati in the morning and Santoshi at night.
"We were both taken into the operation theater at the same time, they told me that I had delivered a baby girl and then they said that she was dead. But they did not show the child. I don't believe it,” says P Padmavati. On the other hand K Santoshi blames the ward boy for creating the confusion.
When a mother's love knows no bounds, science must be the arbiter. After a month of bitter conflict, both families have now decided to take a DNA test and the mothers have finally agreed that they will abide by the DNA report.
