Newlyweds end lives over dowry dispute

CHITTOOR: In a tragic incident, a newly married couple committed suicide on Monday, depressed over the tussle between their families for additional dowry, in Chinnapandur Arundhatiwada village in Varadaiapalemn mandal. A tense situation prevailed in the village with the relatives and locals not allowing police to take the bodies for postmortem.
According to Varadaiapalem SI Anand Reddy, V Ramaiah (25) and V Devasenamma (20) had married two months back. However, the families of the couple who were at loggerheads after a dispute arose on the dowry given during marriage and they tried to separate them. With the dispute not showing any signs of resolution, the newly-weds unable to bear the pressure from their elders to separate, decided to end their lives by consuming poison on Monday. On receipt of information, police reached the spot and made an enquiry about the incident.
However, the couples’ parents, relatives and others who were against police registering a case, prevented them from taking the body for postmortem, resulting in slight tension. Talks are on between police and locals to convince the latter to hand over the bodies for postmortem, according to latest reports.
