New Delhi: At least two people were reported killed and at least 30 were injured in a blast that ripped through one of the bogies of a passenger train near the Diphu railway station in Assam.
The blast took place in the Lumding-Tinsukhia Inter City passenger train in the early hours of Tuesday morning in Diphu, about 300 km east of Assam's main city of Guwahati.
The train was bound for Tinsukia in eastern Assam from Guwahati.
DIG, Central Range, Jeewan Singh DIG told CNN-IBN a time bomb was planted in the bogie and it went off, killing two – a man and a child.
Though no militant group has claimed responsibility for the explosion, Singh said the outlawed Karbi Longri National Liberation Front (KLNLF) is suspected to have carried out the blast.
He said security forces were combing the rail route and feared the casualties may go up.
"The explosion ripped apart the carriage with people tossed in the air after the blast," Vishal Kumar, a witness who was at the railway station waiting to board another train to Guwahati, said by telephone.
The KLNLF Tuesday launched an economic blockade in the region to pressurise the government to hold peace talks.
"We are looking into the KLNLF's role for the train attack," the police spokesman said.
Assam witnessed a deadly wave of bombings Oct 30 in which about 95 people were killed and 300 injured.
