Mumbai: National Film Development Corporation, popularly known as NFDC, is planning to resume film production in a bigger and better way. What’s more, it has got a new Chairman too.
Om Puri, the actor who was part of many NFDC films will now head the body and he plans to introduce a new concept called cooperatives, where big stars would be asked to cut down their fees and become a stake holder in a project and share the profits that the film makes.
“My idea of cooperative is something which has to be tried. I feel sure that there are some people who would come forward for this kind of a thing because there is no cheating involved, not taking anyone for ride. It’s a straight deal between two individuals,” the thespian explained.
Many film-makers like Govind Nihalani – who started his career with an NFDC film – feel, however, that the body needs to fundamentally change its policies because the rules of the game of producing and marketing films have changed completely.
“You need change because the situation has changed so fast, economy has changed, technology has changed, the markets have grown, the platforms have grown. Unless you are flexible in your policies, you will not be able to take best advantage of that and for that,” he said. “It is not necessary that you give up original objectivity, which was to encourage experimentation, new talent and new directors. )
NFDC currently has four films due for release – Via Darjeeling, Lucky Red Seeds, The White Elephant and Bioscope.
With Om Puri at the helm, things may soon change in this bureaucracy-ridden corporation.
