Mumbai: Twenty-six-year-old Renu is a sex worker in Mumbai. Like all the other sex workers, she also does not have a ration card or any other identity proof but now she has a life insurance policy. And this has been possible because of an NGO which helped some sex workers in getting these LIC policies.
“This insurance policy will benefit my children in the long run,” says Renu.
This NGO - Population Services International - along with LIC has so far provided insurance policies to over 250 sex workers.
The assured amount ranges from Rs 5000 to Rs 30,000 and the premium is as low as Rs 350 annually.
The women also don't have to submit any medical fitness documents to avail the policy.
“It is LIC, they have discussed the whole matter with us and have come to the conclusion that medical test is not mandatory for them,” says Regional Manager Finance PSI, Jeevan Prakash Saha.
The NGO also runs a co-operative bank and a store for the sex worker. They are now looking for a corporate tie up to provide free SIM cards to the women.
The biggest concern for most of these women is the financial security of their children. But with this policy document, they hope that their children will be secure even after they are gone.
