New Delhi: When Sneh Kinkhabwala went to stay in Pune, this is how she described the city: "I like Pune because the night life is just amazing over here. I just love the clubs."
It's this free spirit of Pune that attracts many to the city. However, the spirit has dampened now. Last weekend, police shut down over 20 pubs and restaurants, for violating the 0030 hrs IST closing deadline.
And city revellers are clearly unhappy.
Says a Pune-resident, Apeksha Naik, "There's nothing left for us to do after we come back from work. There is nothing we can do to de-stress ourselves, but there's nothing we can do.
Adds the owner of Lush Lounge, Tehsen Poonawala, "Are we going to welcome people with our service, our culture, our open-mindedness or are we going to welcome people by shutting it at 10:30 PM? No city is going to be a global city if it shuts down so early."
The influx of working class with a potentially good spending power has given a huge thrust to nightlife business in Pune, but as the city gets high on spirit, the police here are making sure that Pune does not get carried away with the flow.
Sources in the police say only 10 per cent of the pubs in Pune have necessary licenses, and as police continue to crackdown on law-breakers, many pubs are likely to close down.
