Mumbai: The Leaning Tower of Pisa is old hat but how about the Leaning Tower of Mumbai to claim pride of place?
A close look at E Block of Mangal building located at Mira Road in Mumbai reveals a tilt of 17 inches that has happened just four years after the building was completed.
The tilt has left displaced tiles on the floor and huge cracks on the wall.
"Our floor cracked just six months after we moved in. Every morning we wake up to notice new cracks. We are scared that this building will fall any day," says a resident, Shalini Kadam.
Residents of this block have knocked on the doors of their builder several times but in vain. The proprietor of Rashmi Housing, Yogesh Bosmiya, seems to be in no mood to take up any responsibility and is in fact pushing his other projects to the same residents.
"I have another project of 550 square feet. These houses are of 375 square feet. I told them to pay the difference and shift but they are not ready to do that,” says Bosmiya.
But most of them are in no position to pay the differential which runs to Rs 4 lakh. With little hope of relief from the builder, residents have now decided to move the matter to court but that option is almost certain to leave them in an unsafe habitat for a long time.
