New Delhi: The Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi has accused Nimbus of humiliating the country.
"Terms and conditions set by Nimbus to resolve the deadlock humiliating to the country," Priyaranjan Dasmunsi said on Monday.
"Board of Control for Cricket in India had no right to sell the terrestrial and radio broadcasting rights to Nimbus because they are sacrosanct and belong to Prasar Bharati and AIR respectively," Dasmunsi said.
He said the government would make sure that Indian cricket fans are not deprived of action during the World Cup.
"The Union Government will discuss the matter in the Cabinet and will bring in a proper legislation in February to ensure that the common people of India don't lose out on World Cup coverage," he added.
Dasmunsi went as far as alleging that BCCI violated government guidelines when it invited tenders to sell the cricket broadcasting rights.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said that they would abide by the rules of the country but they too need to earn money.
"We will look at it. We have to abide by the rules and regulations of the country but we have to also earn money. If we don't sell the rights how will we get the money? That is a big question," Shah said.
When asked if BCCI was making a very calculated move on the telecast row, Shah said: "Yes very calculated. Even when we sold our rights there was a clause that a feed would be shared with Prasar Bharati but that was only for terrestrial feed. Nimbus and DD are still discussing it. We want an amicable solution to the issue."
Shah also said that he hoped the fans would be able to watch the next ODI that is to be played on Wednesday.
"I hope the next match is available to the general public on Prasar Bharati's platform as it has got the highest reach. On the other hand Nimbus can take legal recourse in the matter," he added.
