The BJP's change of guard was complete on Saturday with the chief of the party's Maharahstra unit, Nitin Gadkari taking over as the new party President from Rajnath Singh. Rajnath Singh announced his resignation from the post a few months ago. He spoke to CNN-IBN's Divyamanu Chaudhury about his biggest achievement and talked about the nomination of Nitin Gadkari.
CNN-IBN: What do you think was your single biggest achievement as president of the BJP?
Rajnath Singh: Assembly elections have been held in 29 states in my tenure and I can happily say that many states have BJP governments. My biggest achievement would be the fact that for the first time ever, we have a full-fledged government in a state down south.
CNN-IBN: Do you think now that Mr Gadkari has taken over, the role of the RSS and the say of the RSS as far as the BJP is concerned will increase?
Rajnath Singh: I would like to say that in the nomination of Mr Gadkari as the President of the BJP, there is no role of the RSS.
CNN-IBN: Do you think for someone who has not contested elections and for someone who has not played any big role will he inspire leaders of the stature of say Sushma Swaraj?
Rajnath Singh: I think Nitin Gadkari has played a very important role as far as Maharashtra politics is concerned. He is established in the role of a reputed leader as far as Maharashtra politics are concerned. He is known to be well-skilled and imaginative and his image is that of being efficient and able.
