New Delhi: Bharti Yadav’s testimony before an in-camera court proves that she admitted sharing a “special relationship” with Nitish Katara, who was murdered in February 2002.
Bharti’s 33-page testimony, a copy which the CNN-IBN has accessed, shows that she did reject the prosecution’s claim on Wednesday, but accepted the special relationship during cross examination on Friday. Bhartis’ brother, Vikas Yadav, and cousin, Vishal Yadav, are accused off abducting Nitish from a wedding and murdering him.
"I used to like him (Nitish) but there was no proposal for marriage," Bharti said in her testimony. Her testimony was recorded behind closed doors and there was intense speculation over the last two days about what she had said. On Friday, public prosecutor B S Joon ended speculations and rumours.
"Unlike what was reported, Bharti Yadav did not say that Vikas Yadav was innocent or that Nitish was a fantasy she enjoyed," said Hoon.
Bharti accepted Vikas and Vishal were present at the wedding in Ghaziabad but she denied that she had gone looking for Nitish after someone told her that he had walked out with Vishal.
Bharti also denied that she spoke to Nitish’s mother Neelam Katara after he disappeared. She accepted that she had accompanied Nitish to Mumbai to celebrate her sister's birthday. She told the court that she had opened a bank account giving Nitish’s residential address.
The prosecution wanted Bharti’s testimony so that it could establish that the accused had a motive to murder Nitish. Bharti, by accepting the special relationship, does help prosecution in establishing a motive, but she has refuted other allegations.
