Hyderabad: The Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan, with his 86 mistresses, 100 sons and loyalty to Pakistan is believed to have an estimated fortune of 100 million pounds in gold and 400 million in jewellery.
However, even 60 years after he gave up his state and a part of his fortune, the Nizam is yet to finish with his legal wrangles. Three parties including India, Pakistan and his legal heirs claim his frozen bank deposit worth Rs 300 crore. It is also claimed by a host of other claimants, considering that the Nizam had led a colorful life involving several mistresses..
"I don't think it is essential for me to say anything about the others claiming the fortune. I know of Prince Mukram Jah Bahadur, Prince Muzuffar Jah and myself as his legal heirs,” says third grandson to the Nizam, Prince Shahmat Jah.
In 1948 the Nizam deposited Rs 10 crore in the name of his government at the National West Minister Bank in London.
Following a fraudulent transaction involving transfer of funds to the then High Commissioner of Pakistan in London, the Nizam had frozen the account. Now the amount has grown to 300 crore rupees and has several claimants and is due for an out of court settlement.
However, this is not the first fight over the Nizam's fortunes. As recently as 1995, about Rs 400 crore from the sale of the Nizam's jewel collection was divided between 300 descendants. But with the number of claimants only increasing, the picture doesn't seem any different this time.
