Korba: It has been a week since the chimney collapse at the Bharat Aluminium Company Limited (Balco) thermal power plant in Korba killed 41 workers. Officials believe the use of faulty construction materials caused the collapse but till now no one has been held responsible for the mishap.
Following the chimney collapse many of the company's officials have fled the town. But the Central government has asked 89 Chinese engineers and workers who also were engaged in constructing the chimney to stay back in India after preliminary investigations found faults in the construction.
"Our investigations are our focused on the quality of construction. We feel that the chimney collapsed because of poor quality of construction," said Korba Superintendent of Police Ratan Lal Dangi.
The investigation found 18-20 mm thick steel rods instead of 32 mm thickness were used in the construction.
The project was designed by Chinese company SEPCO which outsourced the construction work to Delhi-based Gannon Dunkerley Company Ltd.
Balco has announced compensation for the next of kin of the 41 workers killed in the accident but no compensation has been announced for the seven injured.
"Nothing has been given to me. No one has come from Balco or from the government," said an injured worker Rikesh Parida.
Balco has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the relatives of the dead but no one from amongst the top management has been able to take out the time to meet those battling for their lives in hospital.
The state government has also announced its compensation package but six days after the tragic incident there is not a word on fixing any kind of accountability.
