Mumbai: In a shocker from Maharashtra, Nitin Nikam, a Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) corporator repeatedly and publicly slapped a senior citizen who is a private contractor. The police are yet to take any action against the corporator.
A 65-year-old man, DV Patil, who is a KDMC contractor, was repeatedly slapped publicly by Nikam. Nikam was upset that the private contractor had failed to repair a water pipeline which caused shortage in the area. "I had come there to fix the leakage but he started beating me," Patil said.
Despite the incident being caught on camera, the police have only registered a non-cognizable offence. As such, it is not so unexpected from the MNS because of the history of vigilante justice, but what is surprising is that the police have not taken much of a cognizance of the issue except for registering a non-cognizable complaint against the MNS corporator.
KDMC commissioner Ramnath Sonawane said, "We are investigating and will take action against those found guilty." The MNS corporator has defended himself. But the issue has created a stir in the Kalyan Dombivali corporation with opposition leaders demanding strict action.
