New Delhi: Addressing leaders of the European Union in Brussels before heading for the UN general assembly in New York, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf described the Taliban as the new and far deadlier enemy.

He said the Taliban, with their deep roots in Afghanistan, are the main threat.

"This is a new element which has emerged. It is a more dangerous element because it has roots in the people," he said.

Musharraf also defended his agreement with tribal groups in Waziristan.

The deal he claimed would lay the ground for the economic development of the region and would help Pakistan realise its ambition of becoming the regional bridge linking Central Asia and Southern Asia.

Musharraf has also claimed that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is currently in southern Afghanistan, implying that Omar is being shelterd by his ethnic Pakhtoon tribesmen.

Musharraf stated that the al-Qaeda is on the run and claims that the terrorist outfit has been eliminated from Pakistani cities.
