New Delhi: Nearly five lakh Blackberry users in India can finally heave a sigh of relief. Telecom Secretary S Behura has allayed fears of the dreaded blackout of Blackberry services on Sunday.
Behura says Home Ministry's concern of “lawful interception” can be addressed through dialogue. Operators like Bharti, Vodafone and Reliance and RIM - the companies that offer Blackberry services - are in dialogue with both security agencies and officials of the DoT.
"There is no question of a ban at this point. We are sure will address the concerns,” he said.
Security concerns do not seem to bother PSU giant BSNL either.
"We are planning to offer Blackberry services within a month,” said Director (Finance), BSNL , S D Saxena.
But the Tatas may not take this lying down.
After all, their request to offer the same service was turned down by the government on security grounds.
Said MD, Tata Tele, Anil Sardana, "I am not sure what BSNL is up to. But surely we will seek a level playing field.”
Sources in DoT assure a compromise solution will be worked out. One option could be to ask RIM and service providers to create a mirror image of all emails and data sent.
