New Delhi: Pakistan-based organization, Jammat-ud-Dawa and its chief Hafiz Saeed was black-listed by the UN SC in December 2008.
The United Nations’ al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee has also reacted that it does not share the Indian government's response to the release of Hafiz Saeed by a Pakistani court.
Speaking to CNN-IBN’s Indira Kannan in New York, Richard Barrett, Co-ordinator of the UN Al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee said that Saeed, the Lashkar and the Jamaat ud Dawa continue to remain on the UN’s sanctions list.
Richard Barrett: We do not have any particular reaction. The sanctions they require any government to place any person in custody. Of course, they have reasons to do so, it is really up to them, the sanctions regime.
CNN-IBN: Do you believe that the fact that he was released makes your committees creates any difficulty in persuading other governments to implement the sanction?
Richard Barrett: No, I do not think so. As I said, the sanctions do not require him to be put into custody is the courts in Pakistan decide otherwise. Then, that's their decision and it's their order. Other states will look at that and won't suggest, shouldn't suggest th implementation of sanctions by the sanctions regime.
CNN-IBN: Does that mean that Hafiz Saeed as well as the Lashkar-e-Toeba and the Jamaat-ud-Dawa would continue to be on the sanctions list?
Richard Barrett: Oh yes, there has been no proposal to remove the sanctions against these. They will remain thus until (a) such a proposal is received and (b) agreed to by the Security Council.
CNN-IBN: What is your opinion as far as the steps taken by Pakistan regarding counter-terrorism is concerned?
Richard Barrett: I am in touch with Pakistan. We have a lot of dealing with them and Pakistan is facing a terrible problem from Taliban and al-Qaeda. We are talking on problems they face directly in implementation of sanctions.
Main points:
- UN sanctions regime doesn't require any government to place somebody in custody
- No impact of Saeed release on the Sanctions Regime
