New Delhi: A day after IBN network put on air exclusively, the entire report of the Ram Pradhan Committee on the 26/11 terror attacks as well as the police response to it, the government of Maharashtra was non-committal on action. Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan passed the buck to state Home Minister R R Patil and refused to comment on the report.
"I neither support nor condemn the contents of the Ram Pradhan Committee report that have come out. The state's Home minister will take a decision on this," Chavan said.
The question that everyone wanted an answer to was: why should the government hide the report instead of tabling the entire version in the Maharashtra Assembly? Another question that people wanted an answer to was: Is the government trying to hide somebody's inefficiency or lapses?
Speaking on CNN-IBN, many experts demanded a commission of enquiry to be setup to investigate the series of incidents during the 60-hour terror siege last year.
Former Mumbai commissioner of police, M N Singh said, "Looking at this, one would want the whole matter to be re-investigated by establishing a new commission."
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said he thought that the contents of the report should be made public.
However, R R Patil defended his department's role and claimed ignorance.
"There may be some lapses in the way security was organised during the 26/11 attacks, but I have just taken charge (as state Home Minister) and I need to read the whole report before commenting. However, the drawbacks pointed out will be looked into," he said.
One year after he was relieved of his duties following a careless comment on the 26/11 attacks, R R Patil is once again in the eye of the 26/11 storm as the Maharashtra government continues to skirt accountability for the security lapses during 26/11. But with the winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly just around the corner, the Opposition as well as civil society will be looking for some direct answers.
