No end to cases of atrocities against women; rapes, assault continue

New Delhi: There is no end to cases of atrocities against women in India. More cases of rapes, murders, assault have been reported from different parts of the country. While in Meerut, an engineer killed his 23-year-old daughter allegedly because he wanted a son, in Pune a woman was allegedly abducted and beaten up and in Haryana a school girl attempted suicide after being allegedly raped.

A woman was allegedly abducted at Ahmednagar and kept confined at a brothel in Dhule for 48 hours. What's worse is that she also had to face brutality when she tried to lodge a complaint after escaping from the brothel.

The 18-year-old woman claims that she and her fiance were allegedly beaten up by the police on the suspicion that she was trying to register a false case. She claims that four persons, including a woman, waylaid her, gagged her and drugged her near a mall.

"The police were trying to tamper with my statement. They asked me the same questions repeatedly and beat me. I was telling the truth, but they said I was lying. The accused me of being part of a gang, and that my family was also involved," the victim said.

This happened while she was travelling with her fiance to Shirdi from Pune. The woman claims that she was allegedly beaten up by the brothel-keeper for refusing to enter the flesh trade.

No action has been taken by the police against the brothel-keepers yet. "The incident occurred in Ahmednagar. However, the Tofkhana police officers refused to register the girl's complaint. That's when we took up the matter," senior police official of Koregaon police station, Shivaji Kamble, said.

A man in Meerut allegedly killed his 23-year-old daughter because he was apparently upset that he had no sons. The man, who is an engineer with ONGC, allegedly strangulated his daughter while his wife was away at work.

His elder daughter, who is married, was present at her father's house at the time of the incident. The police have not ruled out honor killing, and are probing that angle. The man has been arrested.

"He was always talking about how he didn't have a son. He had tried to kill her earlier also," the victim's sister said.

Haryana: Man rapes Class 10 student, victim attempts suicide

A minor girl attempted suicide by pouring kerosene on herself after she was allegedly raped in Sonepat, Haryana. The girl who is a class 10 student remains critical after she sustained 90 per cent burns.

The girl's mother claims that the accused allegedly lured her daughter from school on a false pretext.

She claimed that the accused then took her daughter to a secluded place where he allegedly raped her.
