No fresh proposals yet, SEZ FM

New Delhi: Special Economic Zones have been a big bone of contention for the UPA Government.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday told TV 18 network exclusively that all fresh SEZ proposals will get the green signal only after sticky points like land acquisition and rehabilitation policy have been worked out.

"The decision is that pending the GoM meeting, which was inconclusive, they'll go ahead and resolve all the technical and administrative issues relating to the 63 for which notifications have been made and then the process will resume after the GoM decision," says he.

Chidambaram also said he was 'concerned' although not 'worried' by the rising inflation and stated that measures were being taken to control it.

"Some part of it is unavoidable when the economy is growing at 8 to 9 per cent. The reasons for some inflations are clearly discernible - which is supply side constraints like for wheat, pulses and edible oils and until a month ago, sugar. So it's not as though we are grappling with the unknown. Therefore I am not worried. We know what the problem is. I would have been worried if I did not know what the problem was," says he.
