Kochi/ Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government recently came down heavily on illegal encroachments in the hill station of Munnar.
And the ‘Munnar-effect’ is fast catching on in Kochi. The Kerala government's operation in Munnar is fast spreading to other districts in the state.
Taskforce units are now razing illegal shops and constructions on Kochi's famous MG Road but not without resistance. Shops across Kochi remained shut on Thursday to protest the demolition drive.
“We never got enough time. They just gave the notices and within two hours started the demolition. What the government is doing is illegal. We have decided to keep all shops shut against such a move,” says head, Abad Group, M Akbar.
But the government is in no mood to relent. Evictions and land reclamations have started on a war-footing from Kazargode to Thiruvananthapuram.
Says District Collector, Ernakulam, Muhammed Haneesh, “What we are doing here in MG Road is a warning to the rest of the district. These demolitions will continue for sometime till all illegal encroachments are removed.”
But there is relief for some. Chief Minister V S Achuthanathan made it clear on Thursday that the demolition act will not affect the poorest sections of society.
