New Delhi: The government of Delhi has clarified there will be no further delay in nursery admissions. Admission forms will be distributed from December 15 to 31 and the first list of admissions will be declared by February 1st, 2008.
Nursery and kindergarten classes will be known as pre-school and pre-primary respectively with the minimum age for admission to pre-school fixed at 3 years. While schools have been given the autonomy to frame their own guidelines for admission, however, no school is allowed to consider a parent's educational qualification or their financial status.
Minority schools have been given the go ahead to add minority community status as one of its criteria.
Earlier last week, the state government has decided that schools may continue with the two-year pre-primary format but without the admission interview.
Parents like Suparna Bhattacharya feel that the age of three years is too young for a child to be going to school.
She's petitioned the Supreme Court for help. She says, “My child is too young. At this age, every month counts in terms of development. How can the curriculum be the same for both three year and four and a half year old children?"
Suparna's worries also stem from the fact that her three-year-old daughter will be competing with four year olds who could not apply for nursery admissions last year. It means there'll be a 40 per cent increase in the number of applicants.
Principal Tagore International School, Madhulika Sen says, “Where do we have the seats to increase? If we could, we would have increased the number a long time back."
