No more grilling kids, parents

New Delhi: The High Court on Tuesday took a big leap in changing the nursery admissions process. No interviews with the kid or parents for nursery admissions and children who live within 10-kilometre radius of the school are to be given preference.

School admissions are no song and dance for kids these days. But now all that is set to change. The Ashok Ganguly committee formed by the Delhi High Court has made recommendations to make the nursery admissions simpler and transparent. Like in the UK and the US, schools here will have to follow the neighbourhood policy giving admission to kids living in and around to 10-kilometre radius of the school.

Having siblings in the same school could also help a child bag that seat and most importantly no interviews for tiny tots. Parents like Rashmi couldn’t be happier.

She says, “It's such a relief. Atleast my kid won't have to stress out knowing the difference between red and maroon.”

And its not just the kids who will be spared the interview grill, parents too can relax now – no so called social interaction with the school for them either though some schools aren't exactly happy.

Laxman Public School Principal Usha Ram says, “It won’t work because again in neighbourhood people might applying five schools. And suppose I keep waiting for them you please decide if you don’t get please come to me. That seems quite weird.”

The neighbourhood policy though leading to a lot of scepticism and concern might just be a blessing in disguise. If implemented children will no longer need to travel long distance and neighbourhood schools might finally upgrade their infrastructure to the level of big brand name.

The good news doesn't stop here. The Ganguly Committee has recommended that all schools in Delhi should conduct admissions in the December break.

So looks like it's the death knell for prep schools, which have turned the fine art of passing a school interview into a multi-crore industry. So by the look of it all's well that ends well.
