Mumbai: New statues may find it difficult to adorn Mumbai’s squares. The BMC believes in some cases they have led to law and order problems.

A bus being set on fire and Shiv Sainiks taking to the streets – the archival footage from July 2006 shows the extent of law and order problem the defacement of Meenatai's statue caused across Mumbai.

Which is why the Mumbai Municipal Corporation now wants to play safe and is unwilling to give clearances to install new statues.

And its Colaba corporator Vinod Shekhar, who wanted to install a statue of Valmiki, who's got the first veto.

Shekhar said, “In the past there have been installations in the island and chowks, so I see no reason why we should not be allowed to construct such a statue."

But the municipal commissioner argues that any damage to these statues akes life difficult in the city and now wants the government to take a final decision.

Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Jairaj Phatak said, “Though the concerned party was ready to take care of construction and maintenance, but there possibility of law and order cannot be denied. We have only reiterated the state policy."

There are nearly 12000 statues on private and public property across the city. But it seems that new statues would not adorn Mumbai's squares any more.
