New Delhi: Sri Lanka is not pressing India to enhance its role in the peace process.
High level sources have confirmed to CNN-IBN that Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Managala Samaraweera, who is currently on a tour in India, was okay with India's reluctance to supply lethal military equipment to the strife-ridden country.
The Sri Lankan peace process may have been damaged beyond repair, but sources say Samaraweera was keen to brief India on the steps his country was taking to keep the process moving forward.
The sources said that at meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Samaraweera did not press for an enhanced Indian role in the peace process.
Even the sensitive issue of the sale or transfer of lethal military equipment to the Sri Lankan armed forces was papered over.
Defence Minister, Pranab Mukherjee says, "In respect of equipment, we are providing a lot. There is constant interaction between the service officers of both the countries as well."
Mangala Samaraweera echoes this sentiment saying, "Cooperation between the two countries will go from strength to strength."
Indian diplomats say that while much may not have been achieved such visits serve to build understanding and confidence of each other's intentions.
