New Delhi: One of the country's most prestigious colleges, St. Stephen's, is finding it hard to hire a principal. It's not that there aren't any contenders, it's just that the criteria for selection has already ruled out several eligible candidates.
Now, the college supreme council will advertise again for the post, following Reverend Valson Thampu's resignation as officer on special duty, and also because they just got three applications in response to their last advertisement.
The reason isn't hard to guess – the age criteria fixed by the supreme council ruled out many candidates. This time, however, the supreme council might relax the norms regarding the age.
Among those in the running for the post are:
- Jacob Cherian, a lecturer in the St Stephen's physics department. He was the vice-principal following Anil Wilson's resignation as principal.
- MS Frank who has been appointed the pro-term administrator of St Stephen's College, following Thampu's resignation.
- Dr Christal Devadawson, a reader in the English faculty of Delhi University will be the first woman principal if appointed.
- Dr Amit Abraham, a reader in psychology in St John's College, Agra.
- Former principal Anil Wilson hasn't shown any interest till now, but he too is a strong contender.
Meanwhile, some of the contenders say they won't apply if there is no level-playing field.
“I will apply only if the advertisement conforms to the UGC guidelines,” Devadawson said.
The last advertisement that the St Stephen's supreme council came up with was clearly in favour of Thampu. Hopefully, this time round the council will act according to UGC guidelines.
