Navsari (Gujarat): Almost a year after Mumbai terror attacks, some victims are still struggling to meet their ends.
The families of the fishermen who were killed by the terrorists after hijacking the fishing trawler Kuber are still waiting for relief. The Government won’t give them ex-gratia before seeing the dead bodies, which have not been recovered.
Twenty-four-year-old Natu Rathod was one of the five fishermen who were on board the Kuber trawler when it was hijacked by the 26/11 attacked in mid sea.
However, the family has still not received any compensation from the Government. The family has no money to even feed themselves. Most of the times they are provided food by neighbours and other villagers.
“He was the only earning member of the family. We find it difficult to earn our bread now,” says Natu’s mother Gulbiben Rathod.
It’s the same story with Balwant Tandel’s widow. Tandel was another fishermen on board the Kuber.
“My husband was killed in the boat. So many officials came and took our statements but there has been no help so far,” says Damyanti Tandel.
Apart from the captain Amarsinh Solanki, there were four fishermen on board the Kuber when terrorists hijacked it.
It has been established that all the occupants of the trawler were murdered and thrown into the sea. The fishing community even cremated dummies of the slain fishermen last year.
However, according to the law no one is declared dead until the body is recovered and therefore the families are yet to get any help from the Government.
