Chennai: It’s a film's that has got no big names, no item numbers and no slang - elements typical of the current crop Tamil films, but Paruthiveeran has managed to go places.

The most recent being the 58th Berlin Film Festival, where the film got a special mention.

“If our films are to win prizes, they should be a reflection of the culture and tradition of our society. Whether it was Raam or Paruthiveeran, I'd always try to keep that aspect alive, all the more so with Paruthiveeran,” says director Ameer Sultan.

Paruthiveeran's lead role is being essayed by debutant Karthi, brother of Tamil star Surya. The former US-based engineer had to step into the role of a villager for the film. But it's a gamble thats paid off.

"It was a complete transformation for me, a guy back from the US, brought up in the city, to understand what it's like to be in a village. Nowadays, audience is very smart. Even the villagers can make out immediately that you're not a villager. So for me-the biggest challenge was to convince them,” he says.

A controversial gangrape scene in the film evoked critcism when the film released in Tamil Nadu, but as it went won several awards including the Osian Award for Best Film and Best actress, the furore died down.

Berlin is just another stop for this film which will continue to screen in the festival circuit.

"It won awards in the Osian film festival for the best actress and film, then in the Berlin film festival, now we're taking thee film to the Mumbai film festival, then to New York and Italy. So it's a long way to go,” says Sultan.
