Lakme Fashion Week begind March 27

Mumbai: It's time for fashion mania yet again. The 10th Lakme Fashion Week will be held in Mumbai from March 27 onwards. Over 60 designers will be showcasing their fall/winter collection. But are there any takers for yet another fashion extravaganza during these times of a global economic recession?

Narendra Kumar, Wendel Rodricks, Tarun Tahiliani, Vikram Phadnis and Neeta Lulla are some of the A-list designers who are working towards the March 27 deadline as the 10th Lakme Fashion Week kicks off in Mumbai.

The focus will be on the young and as far as the economic slowdown is concerned - that just gives scope for innovation.

"The look is about young people today so the show is about fun young people that we are gong to be talking about. It reflects young people today, it talks about their mood, how to face up to what we are living in today, the recession and all that and has a lot of element of innovation to the collection," described designer Narendra Kumar.

With 103 buyers already registered for the event it doesn't look like the ongoing recession has had a deep impact on the fashion industry yet.

"Times are difficult but people now have to say where is it that I have to invest, because every designer when they participate at any fashion week, pay to participate and nobody pays unless there is a return," said advisor Lakme, Anil Chopra.

This time round the fashion week's grand finale will mark the return of designer Anamika Khanna with a bridal theme.

"Honestly I'm very very excited about the collection. It's about the woman, who is now. She's Independent, progressive, free spirited and has traveled the world. But somewhere inside her there is empathy - she is a woman, she is beautiful and she cares about others. This whole feel of empathy combined with the bold independent spirit is what the collection is going to be about. I'm nervous and stressed, but the excitement is there for sure," said Anamika.

The Lakme Fashion Week also sees a change in venue in it's 10th year. Moving from NCPA in South Mumbai to the Grand Hyatt in the suburbs - perhaps an attempt to make the event much more accessible to the general public.
