Mumbai: Mumbai's famous Ganpati mandal, the Lalbaugcha Raja, claims that it has received cash donations of almost Rs 5 crore this year.

The counting centre of the Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati mandal has been busy accounting for the cash collection for the past few days.

"Around 2 and a half crore devotees visited the mandal this year and they have contributed lots of cash and gold and silver ornaments," says Sanjay Gadekar, Treasurer, Lalbaugcha Raja.

Around 20 people have been counting money for the last 15 days and notes are still stacking up.

The mandal had collected around Rs 4.25 crore in cash last year and this isn't all. The mandal has also received three large pots of gold and five pots of silver ornaments, which will be auctioned on Tuesday.

"All the money collected will be given to our various charities that are engaged in education, health services for women and other free services for economically weaker sections of the society," says Gadekar.

It was expected that recession might act as a dampener in the festivities this time, but if the collections till now are anything to go by, it seems when it comes to faith, there is no slowdown.
