Cast: Catherine Zeta-Jones, Aaron Eckhart
Direction: Scott Hicks
Possibly the most predictable romantic comedy you've seen recently, Catherine Zeta-Jones' new film No Reservations comes as such a disappointment because you've seen the same story play out so many times before.
Zeta-Jones stars as a single woman and one of New York City 's most fabulous chefs whose life pretty much entirely revolves around her job. When her sister dies unexpectedly and she's left to care for her nine-year-old niece, she's got to make some changes in life.
It doesn't help that her boss has hired a distractingly handsome, fun-loving chef - played by Aaron Eckhart - to work with her at the restaurant.
It takes no genius to predict exactly what's going to happen next - despite their very opposite temperaments, Zeta-Jones and Eckhart are going to fall in love. He's also going to teach her to become a much calmer, more spontaneous person, and she's finally going to figure out how to reach out to her niece.
Even some of the scenes in this film are so obvious, you feel like they've been borrowed from some rule-book for romantic comedies - take that fumbling first-kiss between Zeta-Jones and Eckhart, or that scene in which Eckhart knows exactly how to get the little child to eat.
I'm going with two out five for No Reservations, it's an average film with hardly anything new to offer. It's like settling comfortably into your couch with a hot cup of coffee, and then being given a recipe book to read instead of a novel.
Rating: 2 / 5 (Average)
