Sydney: Racial conflict still simmers down under in Australia. Two Indian students were arrested in the latest protest rally in Sydney.
Australian authorities have finally admitted that the attacks are racial but say vigilante groups and retaliatory attacks will not be tolerated.
Running out of patience, the Indian student community in Sydney is launching counterattacks after being attacked.
Late on Tuesday night, a group of angry Indian students protested in the streets of western Sydney. When the police tried to stop them, they got violent.
What followed was that two students were arrested.
“We are innocent! Why is everyone attacking innocent people, just tell us that!" said one student protester. Students accused the police of turning a blind eye against the attackers.
A protester, Errol Beis said, “I've never seen any cops, frankly. There should be cops patrolling the city continuously. We need safety.”
Within hours of that showdown came the most candid admission by the Victorian State Premier who finally agreed there was a racial motive behind the attacks on Indians.
Victorian premier, John Brumby said, “There is no doubt that if you look at some the video evidence of these, they have been crimes which are racially based.”
But Prime Minister Rudd appeared cautious. He said any ethnic violence is unacceptable.
Victorian Police assured more action.
Victorian police authority Simon Overland said, “It will involve high visibility police operations in and around a number of railway stations across metropolitan Melbourne where we know that a lot of this activity is concentrated.”
But for the Indian students who are facing the roughest weather and attacks, words are not enough. They say they want to see action on the ground before their own anger spirals out of control.
