Mumbai: Mumbai Police Commissioner Hassan Gafoor has denied that they had any specific intelligence regarding Mumbai attacks but said that immediately after the September 20 Marriott Hotel attack in Pakistan, there was an alert saying that places like the Taj Hotel could attacked.
"Intelligence report regarding attack through sea was received last year but it was focused on Gujarat and south India," said Hassan Gafoor.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai on Tuesday evening, Gafoor said that investigations into the Mumbai terror attacks shows that only 10 terrorists, divided into five groups of two each, were involved in the attacks.
“The terrorists used five taxis in carrying out their attacks at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Station (VT Station), Oberoi Hotel, Nariman House, Cafe Leopold and the Taj Hotel. There were five terrorists divided into five groups of two terrorists each," Gafoor said.
"Explosives were also loaded into taxis and one went off in Vile Parle and one went off between Cafe Leopold and the Taj Hotel. The terrorists apparently put the bombs under the front seat of the taxis and timed bomb," he said.
Gafoor said that all the terrorists came to Mumbai from Karachi after hijacking an Indian fishing trawler in the high seas. After coming near the Indian coastline, the terrorists killed the captain of the trawler and used dinghies to land near Gateway of India.
Gafoor revealed that that till now the investigations show that all the 10 terrorists, who were trained for over a year by ex-Pakistan Army personnel, involved in the attacks had come to Mumbai for the first time.
"All 10 terrorists have been accounted for. One is under arrest and nine are dead. There is no report of any woman involved in the attack. Each terrorist had an AK assault rifle, 10 magazine, loaded pistols and explosives with them," said Gafoor.
He also said that all terrorists had detailed maps of their targets and they knew where they had to go. He pointed out that the terrorists were very tech savvy and investigators have recovered satellite phones, GPS instruments from the location of encounters.
"We have not detained any body else except for one terrorist arrested so far in the case," Gafoor also clarified.
Gafoor also added that there was no credibility to the reports that some of the terrorists were of British nationality but added that the arrested terrorist Ajmal Amir Kasab is certainly of Pakistani nationality.
"The arrested terrorist has admitted that he belongs to a district in the Punjab province of Pakistan," Gafoor said.
He also rubbished reports that some of the terrorists were hotel staffs and added that the drivers of the taxis hired by terrorists too were not involved in the attacks.
All the terrorists were carrying money. The terrorist caught live was carrying around Rs 5000. Some foreign currency was also recovered from the terrorists killed in the encounter but that belonged to the tourists who were shot dead. Credit cards found on the terrorist also belonged to those who were killed in these locations," Gafoor said.
He also said that that the terror attacks having links with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim have not yet established and investigations are still on.
He also confirmed that India is being helped by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the United States of America teams in the investigations and added that investigations about the involvement of a little known group Deccan Mujahideen which has claimed responsibility for the attacks, is being verified.
