Chennai: A private television channel was restrained by a city court on Tuesday from airing a TV serial based on the life and crimes of notorious Tamil bandit Veerappan.

The order was issued by the Chennai Civil Court on a suit filed by Veerappan's widow V Muthu Lakshmi.

Lakshmi asked for a permanent ban to restrain any channel from "publishing and telecasting the name, identity and interpretation of Veerappan, in any form, without her written consent".

After Veerappan was gunned down by the Tamil Nadu police on October 18, 2004, some private TV channels approached Lakshmi to get seek information that could be used for making a serial on the bandit's life, she said.

Lakshmi said the channel already started showing the promos of the serial, titled Maveeran from February 14. “If it was telecast it could damage and tarnish the image, name, identity and interpretation of Veerappan,” she added.

The widow is keen not to let Veerappan’s past affect the studies and future of her children. Shhe said “such depiction would put them to irreparable loss and hardships”.
