New Delhi: Parts of Rajasthan continue to remain tense because of protests by Gujjars demanding ST status.
The total death toll in the violence has climbed to 33. Train services through Bayana remain disrupted. The Gujjars have called for a bandh in Ajmer. Meanwhile, Gujjar leader Kirori Singh Bainsla has rejected the government's offer for talks.
On going to Jaipur for talks with the government, he says, “I can’t leave Bayana. I request the government to send their representative here and start negotiations.”
On government’s claim of forwarding a recommendation letter to the center, “It has not been sent at all. GOI letter dated Jan 23rd 2008 says that if the government of Rajasthan wants to give ST status to Gujjars, it should send a report.”
Gujjar leader Kirori Singh also said he disapproved of the ongoing violence. “I have just made an appeal to my community to have a peaceful agitation. No violence will be tolerated,” he told CNN-IBN.
