Chennai: Lawyers' boycott in Chennai is expected to end soon as they have received a court order to return to work.
Even though the lawyers have decided to resume work at the Madras High Court but they have decided to make their unhappiness over the court's order very clear.
The lawyers have decided not us honorifics like Your Honour and M'Lord but instead they will now address the judges either by their name or call them Mr Judge or Mr Justice.
This was decided by the protesting lawyers and their associations after the court issued them a notification asking them to appear in courts.
"They issued us a notification compelling us to appear in court. We didn't expect this kind of threat from the judiciary. When lawyers were put under threat, we decided to call them Mr," said Madras High Court Advocate's Association President Paul Kanagaraj.
The protest also has the backing of Tamil Nadu High Court Advocate's Association.
"The government failed to take any appropriate action and the judiciary also failed to take any action against the erring officials. Therefore we passed these resolutions," said S Prabhakaran Tamil Nadu High Court Advocate's Association President.
The court has worked for only nine days this year and with the boycott by the lawyers still on, legal assistance centers have been put up at different places inside the High Court to help litigants file their own petitions.
"We have made this arrangement only to project that we are not against public. We are working for the public," claimed Paul Kanagaraj.
But how far the legal aid centres and calling the judges Mr Justice would help the lawyers' cause is a different question.
